Located 70km from Ho Chi Minh City, Cu Chi Tunnels is a must-visit destination for cruise passengers on Phu My shore excursions. This immense underground network played a crucial role during the The War Against America in Vietnam, serving as the Viet Cong’s operational base during the Tet Offensive in 1968 and witnessing several military campaigns.
As we journey to Cu Chi, enjoy the breathtaking scenery of rubber plantations and rice paddies. Upon arrival, watch a short introductory video to learn about the tunnel’s construction before venturing into the maze of underground passageways. Explore war relics on display, including mantraps, the remains of an American tank, and bomb craters left by 500lb bombs from B52 bombers.
After exploring the historic Cu Chi Tunnels, we will return to Ho Chi Minh City for a well-deserved break. Here, you will indulge in a delicious Vietnamese lunch at a carefully selected local restaurant, offering an authentic taste of the region’s rich culinary heritage.
After a delightful lunch, we continue our journey to the Reunification Palace, a site deeply connected to Vietnam’s modern history. Once the presidential palace of South Vietnam, this historic landmark played a pivotal role in the country’s reunification when a North Vietnamese tank crashed through its gates on April 30, 1975, marking the end of the Vietnam War.
As you explore its grand halls, secret bunkers, and war command rooms, you will gain a deeper understanding of Vietnam’s past. The palace remains almost untouched since that historic day, offering a fascinating glimpse into the country’s turbulent yet resilient journey toward peace and unity.
Next, we visit two of Ho Chi Minh City’s most iconic landmarks, showcasing the elegance of French colonial architecture.
First, marvel at the Notre Dame Cathedral, built between 1877 and 1883 with materials imported from France. Its stunning red brick façade, twin bell towers, and stained-glass windows make it a masterpiece of Gothic and Romanesque design.
Just a short walk away, explore the Saigon Old Post Office, designed by the legendary Gustave Eiffel. This beautifully preserved building, with its arched ceilings, intricate details, and vintage telephone booths, transports visitors back to the colonial era. Take a moment to admire the grand interior and perhaps send a postcard home as a unique souvenir.
If time allows, we will visit the War Remnants Museum, a powerful and thought-provoking destination that offers deep insights into the war in Vietnam and its lasting impact. The museum houses an extensive collection of photographs, military vehicles, and war artifacts, including fighter jets, tanks, and bomb fragments.
Inside, explore a series of exhibits that depict the realities of war, from the effects of Agent Orange to the resilience of the Vietnamese people. While the displays can be emotionally moving, they provide an invaluable perspective on Vietnam’s history, struggles, and path to peace.
This visit serves as a poignant conclusion to your journey, leaving you with a deeper appreciation of Vietnam’s past and its remarkable resilience.
Special Note: The visit to Cu Chi lasts around 5 hours, and with 3 hours for the city, it will be a hectic day-tour starting off from Phu My Port. You can arrange your tour from the Port in Vung Tau if your cruise docks for the whole day and leaves in the evening.
